Rocky in the studio in Vermont
Rocky’s Recording Session with Will Ackerman Current
What's up!?
Lot's of new stuff to talk about.
We, Kimberly and I, spent most of the month of May in Vermont finishing the tracking of my new CD. So let's catch up a little there.
The vibe is very laid back and groovy. There are two Grammy Awards on the shelf. (and a paper version of one I made and cut out...) The gear is awesome and Corin is a genius behind the board.
Oh...and did I mention my producer is Will Ackerman? :)
Will is an awesome producer. He knows his stuff.
Will was able to strip away a great deal of unnecessary fluff from my music and leave that which was needed and no more. We're not just talking about simplifying...it was more than that.
I once heard someone say that a sculptor simply removes everything that doesn't belong....leaving only what is needed. If the subject is a horse the sculptor simply removes everything that is not a horse. It was like that. You'll hear soon...you see if you don't agree.
The players on this record have no less than a half dozen Grammy Awards between them. Jeff Oster, the flugal horn player, is the 2008 winner of the NAR Album of the Year Award and another one too!
Do you remember on Saturday Night Live the "G E Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band"? Man they rocked. Well the bassist for that band is one of the bass players on my CD.
His name is T Bone Wolk. T Bone has also been with Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates for more than 20 years. His list of credits is simply too long to put here. He did an amazing job on the CD.
I referred to TBone as one of the bass players on the CD. That's because we are featuring a couple of different bassist on this work.
One of the other bass players is my dear friend Patrick O'leary. Those of you familiar with my live performances know that Patrick is at my side for the most of them and has been for a decade or more. I'm thrilled that Patrick is on this CD. You are going to love his work.
The other bassists featured are Dan Greenspan and Michael Manring. Both are amazing musicians. Dan played stand up on one cut. So very nice!
Then there is Manring. One of the most well known bass plyers on the planet. Michael is playing fretless on one of my songs. Wait till you hear!
Wait till you here the work Master Percussionist Derrik Jordan did. And some great fiddle too!
This CD is very organic. There are no keyboard tracks. For orchestration we used violinist Steve Shuch and cello genius Eugene Freison. Both simply wonderful.
Steve's tracks are very moving. Eugene created the cello ensemble and wrote some sweet, sweet lines. Seriously...absolutely beautiful. Add Jeff Oster's horns and the sound is awesome!
I ended up with a little more music on the CD than I thought as well. While there for the month of May I wrote and recorded two new songs and recorded my own piano version of Will's song "Pictures" from his newly released CD "Meditations" available exclusively at Target stores.
So to sum up...I'm thrilled with how it all went and can't wait to get it mixed, mastered and manufactured for distribution. It should be available online, at my concerts, in Target stores (fingers crossed) and distributed by Universal Records starting in September or October.
Thank you all for your prayer and support. I love yuns!! Stay tuned!
